With 25% tariffs on goods from Canada and Mexico now a reality, economists predict that prices for some supermarket staples will rise.

“Prices on everything from avocados to tequila are set to rise as new tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico take effect,” says Ram Ganeshan, professor of operations and supply chain at William & Mary’s Raymond A. Mason School of Business.

“With nearly half of U.S. imports of fruits and vegetables coming from Mexico and key products like meat, dairy, and alcoholic beverages imported from both countries, these tariffs will drive up costs across grocery aisles,” Ganeshan says.

Federal cuts and tariffs could lead to more food insecurity

The Legislative Finance Committee said earlier this week that new federal policies — like tariffs and federal funding cuts — would have an outsized effect on New Mexicans, and that means food insecurity could rise as well.

In 2023, Mexico accounted for 70% of New Mexico’s exports, and 41% of its imports, which amounts to 2.5 billion dollars, so a proposed tariff of 25% would increase prices on many products for sale in the state – including fresh produce.

That means higher grocery prices.

Флоридским апельсиновым садам пришел кирдык.
1) Как случилось в Калифорнии - девелоперы скупают землю под строительство апартаментов. Фермерам выгоднее продать землю чем платить деньги легальным работникам.
2) Все сады заражены "Citrus greening disease". Так как все деревья выращены клонированием, то из-за отсутствующего генетического разнообразия нет устойчивости к этой заразе.

Из-за урагана Милтон (?) во Флориде - чуть ли не половину деревьев выкосил. + какая то зараза на остававшиеся деревья напала.

Понятно. Спасибо. Мне почему-то казалось, что раз цитрусовые у нас из Кали, то и сок оттуда.

Есть два типа апельсинов - те которые легко чистятся и разделяются на дольки и те которые ногти обломаешь пока очистишь. В Калифорнии выращивают больше тех которые на еду, во Флориде больше тех, которые на сок.

Сегодня ездила в Спраутс. Покупала все только самое необходимое и только по гросери списку. Удивительно, но потратила только 117 долларов
